A full house rewire is one of the biggest electrical jobs a homeowner will ever commission — and one of the most important. If your home was built or last wired before the 1980s, the chances are the cables behind your walls are approaching or past the end of their safe working life. Here’s what a rewire actually involves and what it costs in the Dorset area.

TL;DR — House Rewire Cost at a Glance

  • Typical cost: £2,800–£6,500 depending on property size
  • What’s included: All new wiring, consumer unit, sockets, switches, testing, NICEIC certificate
  • Time: 3–10 working days depending on size
  • Must be done by: A registered electrician (Part P of Building Regulations)
  • Making good: Replastering and decorating is separate — handled by your decorator after we finish

Do You Actually Need a Full Rewire?

Not every old house needs a complete strip-out. An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) from £120 is the definitive way to find out. The report tests every circuit and tells you exactly what condition your wiring is in.

That said, these are the warning signs we see most often across Poole, Bournemouth, and the surrounding area:

  • Rubber or lead-sheathed cables — wiring from before the 1960s that becomes brittle and exposes bare conductors
  • A rewirable fuse board — ceramic fuse holders with wire bridges instead of modern MCBs
  • Frequent tripping or blown fuses — circuits that were never designed for modern loads
  • Two-pin or round-pin sockets — a clear sign of pre-1960s wiring
  • Burning smells or scorch marks around sockets, switches, or lights
  • A patchwork of different wiring ages — common in Dorset homes that have been partially updated over the decades

What Does a Full Rewire Include?

A rewire replaces everything behind the walls. Here’s what you get:

  • New consumer unit — modern 18th Edition metal-clad board with MCBs, RCDs, and surge protection
  • All new circuits — lighting, ring finals (sockets), cooker, shower, and any dedicated circuits you need
  • New sockets and switches — positioned for how you actually live, with enough sockets to stop relying on extension leads
  • New light fittings — or preparation for your chosen fittings
  • Full earthing and bonding — brought up to current standards
  • Testing and certification — every circuit tested, plus an Electrical Installation Certificate

We also discuss extras during the survey — things like USB sockets, outdoor power, home office circuits, EV charger preparation, or CCTV cable routes. If you’re rewiring anyway, adding these at the same time costs a fraction of what they’d be as separate jobs later.

What Affects the Price?

Property size and circuit count is the biggest factor. More rooms means more cable, more sockets, more testing, and more time.

Property type matters too. Period homes in Charminster or Westbourne with lath and plaster walls take longer than 1970s builds on Canford Heath with plasterboard. We route cables carefully around original features — cornicing, picture rails, ceiling roses — but it takes more planning.

Accessibility — properties with loft access and suspended timber floors are faster to wire than concrete-floored flats or solid-walled cottages where every cable route needs chasing out.

Earthing system — some older Dorset properties, particularly rural ones near Wareham or Ringwood, run on TT earthing with an earth rod. If the supply has changed but the earthing hasn’t been updated, there’s additional work involved.

Making good is not included in our prices. Replastering and redecorating after a rewire is separate work, usually handled by your decorator. We minimise the amount of making good needed by using existing voids, floor routes, and loft space wherever possible.

Can You Stay in the House During a Rewire?

Yes — we work room by room to keep disruption manageable. You’ll lose power to individual circuits as we work on them, but we reconnect each area before moving to the next. Most customers stay in the property throughout the rewire with minimal inconvenience.

The Consumer Unit Upgrade Alternative

If your wiring is in reasonable condition but your fuse board is outdated, a consumer unit upgrade from £450 is the single most impactful improvement you can make. It adds RCD protection to every circuit and takes about half a day. An EICR will tell you whether a board upgrade is sufficient or whether the wiring itself needs replacing.

Rewiring Across Dorset — What We See

In Poole and Broadstone, many 1970s estates still have their original wiring — functional but approaching 50 years old and often lacking RCD protection. These are typically straightforward rewires with good access via loft spaces and suspended floors.

Bournemouth’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Boscombe, Winton, and Southbourne present more character — and more routing challenges. We have extensive experience rewiring period properties while protecting original features. See our detailed guide to rewiring period properties in Bournemouth.

Wimborne and Christchurch have a mix of 1930s bungalows and post-war semis. The bungalows are often the quickest to rewire due to their single-storey layout and accessible loft spaces.

Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs properties tend to be larger, high-specification homes requiring 15–25+ circuits, smart home preparation, and premium switch plates. These are bigger jobs but we’re well set up for them.
