EV charger installation cost in 2026: from £450 to fit a charger you’ve already bought, or from £750 with us supplying it. Which charger you pick only shifts the price by about £200. Where you park and what state your consumer unit is in make a bigger difference. Every price here is fully fitted by Tim, a NICEIC electrician based in Creekmoor, Poole, and includes the dedicated circuit, the protection the regs call for, testing, the certificate and setting up the app. Local survey times and install detail are on our EV charger installation page.

Where we work: Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Wimborne and the rest of East Dorset (BH postcodes). If you’re further afield, use this to check what a proper quote should include.

Electric car charger installation cost by parking

The charger is the smaller part of the bill. What really sets the price is how far the car is from the house, because that decides how much cable, containment and paperwork the job needs:

Where you parkWhat the install involvesFrom
Driveway beside the houseWall-mounted charger, short cable run, half-day job£750
Coastal home near the waterIP65 charger and saltwater-resistant fittings£850
Terrace with a side passageCharger on the flank wall, cable managed down the passage£900
Terrace with rear-lane parkingCharger on the garden wall, cable through to the board£900
On-street, directly outsideCross-pavement gulley with a BCP Council permit we apply for£950
Flat with a shared supplyCommunal circuit, freeholder agreement, network operator involved£1,100

Not every street can take a pavement gulley. If we can’t do your parking safely, we’ll tell you at the survey. For terraced streets in detail, see EV chargers for terraced houses.

Home EV charger installation cost: what is in the price

The fitted price covers the charger (unless you’ve bought your own) and its own dedicated circuit from the consumer unit. A charger pulls full load for hours at a time, so it never goes on a spur off something else.

The circuit gets a Type-A or Type-F RCD, which is what an EV circuit needs. Most houses round here are on a PME supply, so the 18th Edition also requires open-PEN protection in case the network loses its neutral. Some chargers have that built in. If yours doesn’t, we fit it separately.

Plenty of local homes have a 60A or 80A main fuse. Where that’s tight, we set up load management, so the car backs off when the oven and shower are on instead of blowing the main fuse.

Then it’s testing, the NICEIC certificate, telling SSEN (the network operator) where that’s required, and setting the charger up on your tariff app before we go, Intelligent Octopus Go or whatever you’re on.

If a cheaper quote doesn’t mention open-PEN protection or the RCD type, ask why. Those are usually the bits that have been left out.

What makes an EV charger install cost more?

The consumer unit is the big one. If there’s a spare way and the right protection, the charger circuit goes straight in. An older split-load board, rewirable fuses or a full board usually means a new consumer unit first. That’s from £450 (see our consumer unit replacement cost guide) and we quote both together as one job.

Cable length comes next. The standard price covers a normal run. Going further, out to a detached garage say, is from £15 a metre.

Parking adds containment and time, as the table above shows: a side passage, a rear lane or a pavement gulley each cost a bit more.

As for the charger itself, the Easee One is the cheapest we fit. The Zappi costs more, but if you’ve got solar panels its solar diversion is worth having. Our EV charger comparison goes through which one suits which house.

Is there a grant for a home EV charger?

The OZEV EV chargepoint grant pays 75% of the cost up to £500 per socket, funded to 31 March 2027. It covers renters and flat owners with their own off-street parking, landlords, and homeowners with only on-street parking (towards a cross-pavement gulley). Owner-occupiers with a private driveway do not qualify.

You can only claim it through an OZEV-authorised installer. We’re not on that list, so our prices are the full price with nothing to claim back. If you do qualify, get a quote from an authorised installer as well as from us and compare.

How long does it take?

A standard driveway job takes 3 to 4 hours. Surveys in Poole are usually the same week, and we fix the install date there and then. If there’s a consumer unit to change or a long cable run, it can be a full day, and you’ll know that before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions

From £450 fitted if you already have the charger, or from £750 supplied and installed with an Easee One. The Ohme Home Pro and Pod Point Solo 3 are from £850, the Tesla Wall Connector from £900 and the Zappi from £950. Every price includes the dedicated circuit, the protective devices, testing and the NICEIC certificate.

The charger (unless you supply it), a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, a Type-A or Type-F RCD, open-PEN protection, up to the standard cable run, a full test, the NICEIC certificate and setting the charger up on your tariff app before we leave.

Parking and the consumer unit. A side passage adds about £150 for cable management, a pavement gulley for on-street parking about £200, a coastal saltwater-rated install about £100, and a long cable run from £15 a metre. An older board without the right protection may need a consumer unit upgrade first, which we quote alongside.

No. The grant has to be claimed through an OZEV-authorised installer and we are not on that list, so our prices are the full price with nothing to claim back. Owner-occupiers with their own driveway do not qualify for the grant in any case.

A standard install takes 3 to 4 hours. A long cable run or a consumer unit upgrade on the same visit can take it to a full day. We confirm the time at the free survey.
